Air purifier and Pollution:Really are not That Bad? Think Again



If you watched the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, you saw firsthand what happens when the air is polluted."air purifier made in China!" You saw the concern of top athletes and how they had to train differently to neutralize the effects of pollution on the body if they wanted to win a gold medal. The pollution known as smog, a mixture of pollutant gases (including ozone) and dust particles such as those discharged from the surface of the road by traffic, clearly causes a myriad of health problems, plus it damages crops and ecosystems.

Air Pollution is Inescapable



Even though air pollution is not at the point in America where people walking on the street have to wear air masks and gas masks here, experts say our air has much to be desired. And CDC experts report that the rate of those developing asthma increased in prevalence during 1980 to 1996.

In fact, you could be living in a pristine area of the country or out in the woods where it seems that the air is healthier, and still there are questions about the nature of the air you're breathing. We learned this from recent wildfires here in California. The smoke from wildfires is a mixture of fine particles from burning trees, gases, and other plant materials. The smoke not only hurts your eyes; it irritates your lungs and respiratory tract and worsens any present heart and lung diseases you may already have.

Smoke in the air from any source can cause wheezing and shortness of breath, chest discomfort, a cough and can send you to the emergency room simply because you have lost the ability to breathe normally in those with heart and lung disease. And as local Sacramento weekend warrior and regular runners discovered a few months ago, the smoke can affect healthy people as well as those with a weakened respiratory system.

Air Pollution is Trackable

Lack of visibility is the most noticeable sign of air pollution. Governmental officials monitor the airborne particles most responsible for reducing visibility, and have for years, especially over 150 national parks, wilderness areas and other remote sites across the U.S. They identify the sources of the emissions most responsible for the reduction in visibility and characterize the compositions and sizes of these particles. And they spend their entire career developing policies for controlling emissions.

Consider, for example, what is happening in the environment to produce airborne particles: expansive forest fires, the occasional industrial fire, incineration smokestacks releasing harmful particles such as PCBs, volcanoes erupting, and even hotel or large structure implosions that release an enormous amount of particulate matter into the air.

But there's more to the problem than what meets the eye...and what we breathe outdoors.

Going Indoors to Escape Air Pollution Is Not a Feasible Solution

Humans spend the majority of their time indoors and there's even a problem with the indoor air quality.

That's because of eight reasons:
1) Building materials emit air pollutants (see more below)
2) Cleaning products contribute to household pollution
3) Commercial and industrial emissions in the workplace are often a hazard
4) Even cooking can emit air pollutants
5) Often coding regulations are not followed and too many people and animals are living in closed quarters which makes it unhealthy
6) Tobacco smoke
7) Inefficient ventilation rates, especially where no outside air is brought into the house
8) Radon contamination from the ground underneath the home

Building materials that create a problem with outgassing include carpets, draperies, particle board, upholstery, plywood, urea-formaldehyde foam insulation, and even the polyvinylchloride containing shower curtains. Porous materials that allow the natural diffusion of air include brick, plaster, stone and lumber, and these materials also absorb indoor moisture, preventing replication of mold spores.

A Relatively Simple Solution

The very minimum you should do to insure good high quality clean air inside the house and protect yourself is to get an air filter/an air filtration system. There are many on the market that do the job quite well. Generally they have different levels of filtration, for example they may contain both a HEPA filter which clears viruses, bacteria and fungi from the air and an activated charcoal filter to which harmful chemicals are adhered.

When you get an air filter for the home, make sure that you change the internal filters frequently; they are your main source of protection against airborne pollution.
